Digitizing Photos with a Phone
No access to a personal scanner or a professional service? Here are instructions for digitizing your photos with your phone using:
- Your phone camera
- A photo scanning app
Please note our instructions for adjusting your phone settings.
Option A: How to Take Good-Quality Pictures with your Phone Camera
Step 1: Best Lighting
- Find a well-lit flat surface either outside, or inside next to a window offering soft light
- Avoid direct sunlight or sunbeams hitting your photo to prevent glare and colour altering
- You can also use your body to create a shadow over the photo to prevent glare

Step 2: Position
-
Set up a “photo station” so that you are either directly above or directly in front of your photo
- Set up the photo against a chair or on a hard surface propped up on one side so your picture is angled up towards you
- Kneel, crouch, or rest your elbows somewhere to steady your hands
- Using a tripod helps
Step 3: Phone Settings
Every phone is different. Check camera settings to make sure you capture at the highest quality.
- Enable the iPhone Grid feature by navigating to Settings → Camera → Composition → Grid
- Position the camera lens right over the middle of the photo, so all sides of the photo line up with the grid. (Avoid tilting the camera)
- Hold your phone still, make sure the image is in focus, then snap the photo
Option B: Use a Photo Scanning App
Photomyne is an easy-to-use photo scanning app available for Apple and Android devices
- In a well-lit area, hover your phone above or in front of your photo
- Hold the capture button for 3 seconds
-
The app will crop to the edges of your photo
- Do not add filters or adjust the colour. Our professional designers will optimize the quality of all photos to pull them together.
- Photomyne allows you to write captions for each photo
- Save your photos to an album and label as "Reminisart Photos"
(There are many photo scanning apps available. Check to make sure they have the same settings as above)
